We would like to introduce Dean Price from Tees Tech Joinery in the UK who earlier this year set up Polyboard and OptiNest with his company’s SCM CNC machines.

Dean has outlined how his company processes the work they receive, and was also kind enough to talk about the Polyboard library set up service he ordered from Wood Designer. This set up all his hardware and other manufacturing details in Polyboard ready to access with the click of a button for any project he wants.

The error free machined parts his CNC outputs are then extremely easy to assemble and fit. Overall, he has achieved a really nice integration of woodworking design software and CNC.

We are a bespoke joinery and cabinet manufacturer, all projects are made in house using the latest fabricating technology and supplied direct to the customer.

Here’s a quick overview of our workflow which integrates really well together. We use Polyboard Pro PP and OptiNest with SCM CNCs running Xilog.

  1. Once we have assessed a clients needs we can work through a design very quickly with them in fine detail using Polyboard. The huge amount of flexibility and visuals of the software makes it very customer friendly and gives the client great confidence the job is in excellent hands.
  2. We move the work in to production and nest the various parts into OptiNest ready to be cut on the CNC machining centres, this works very well as all the materials are well organised which makes it easy to use various types of panels and timber and process each correctly.
  3. The nested materials now go straight into Xilog for machining, where they are cut and labelled with stickers using the information from OptiNest and Polyboard which lets us know exactly which part it is along with edges to be edged.
  4. The job is now ready to assemble using 3D and exploded printouts of the design from Polyboard, this makes it easy knowing what pieces go where.

I found this workflow amazingly user friendly and great to pass all the manufacturing information down through production with ease, the visual aspects of both Polyboard and OptiNest meant spotting mistakes before they could even happen.

We took advantage of a library set up pack which got my own skills and knowledge of Polyboard up and running very quickly along with working alongside the team at Wood Designer to create my own set of manufacturing methods I use daily.

Printer/planter project

We recently fitted out an office for a computer games manufacturer which had demanding storage space for lots of computers and cable management logistics to link them all together while creating a pleasant working environment for staff.

Here are the units set up in Polyboard, including console desks and printer/planter units:

Polyboard made this a great job to plan, we managed to create printer stations with integrated planters and lighting, overhead storage units with sliding doors, and kept all cables out of sight but still accessible to make use of every space.

      Hi Lincoln, thanks for your comment. Polyboard’s libraries come with lots of models and hardware. Go to the Polyboard download page to check them out. In practice though, for the carcass/facade construction, most businesses make these models themselves as they like them then apply our manufacturing methods. These methods are style sheets that describe how you like your hardware, edging and other assembly details set up. You can save each model in your own library, resize for new jobs and quickly apply the methods you want. It’s a very quick way to design.

    Hi Ema,
    Polyboard can export CNC code directly to your Morbidelli.
    The program can also print the labels and barcodes.
    If you set up Polyboard with our optimisation software OptiCut the furniture parts from Polyboard will be automatically optimized onto the sheet material and OptiCut will produce the cutting maps and eventually the machine cutting code to run your beam saw.
    The labels will be printed in sequence and with bar codes.
    We already have many clients using Polyboard with OptiCut with your machine configuration and you shouldn’t have any problem getting everything up and running quickly and easily.

    We are a small furniture manufacturer interested in your Polyboard, working with SCM Morbidelli CNC and I want to ask is it possible to set up labels with barcodes for our beam saw Mayer and export CNC files to our CNC?
