Hi Manuel,

I don’t know what your CNC guy means as all the geometry is closed and joined up properly and shouldn’t create any problem for machining.

He will have to be more specific about the problem.

Some grooves are not extended over the part edge because they were set up like this in the original model.

stopped-grooves.jpgImage Enlarger

I could extend the grooves but this will certainly not make any difference to the machinability of the files. All grooves are set up as closed polylines that can be machined as pockets if necessary.

As for the circles, I’ve also checked the geometry and they are all good clean closed circles so no problem here.

The oblong holes are closed polylines  so have no gaps either.

So globally I can’t see what to adjust to make the file more machinable.

All the best,

Ness

Man it’s hard to find someone in Australia that can CNC cut this simple project…confused

I’ve gotten a reply back from one of the CNC places (I’m trying a few) with the following comment & attached screenshot:

“We can CNC Router cut all your DXF`S (Except you need to join up spots that are not connected shown in screen shot with arrows)”

Manuel.JPGImage Enlarger

Maybe it’s because the grooves don’t go past the edges of the panels?

Maybe the grooves he’s talking about should be like this?

Ness, could you please try to fix the grooves as requested by the CNC guy & provide an updated dxf file?

Thank you,

Manuel

Great work Ness, thank you.

Everything looks OK. I’ll send the files to the CNC guy & will let you know if any issues.

Cheers,

Manuel

Hi Manuel,

Here are your nested files. I’ve nested your 18mm sheets and reduced the trim cuts to 5mm, this makes it possible to cut all parts from one sheet.

I’ve included the nesting map for the total sheet and the machine files for the flip sides of the separations. To make things a bit clearer I’ve also changed some of the part names.

Note that the exploded view part numbers are tacked onto the end of the part names. These are not the same as the Optinest or Polyboard part numbers.

Can you check everything is ok and tell me if you need the other parts nested?

All the best,

Ness

Hi Manuel,

This is all Ok.

I’m actually away up to Wednesday so, sorry for the delay but I wont be able to process your file until then.

I’ll adjust a bit the CNC DXF files and post the nested files as soon as I get back.

All the best,

Ness

Hi Ness,

I can see the project file now thank you & I’m OK with the design.

I asked the CNC guy to check the dxf file & this is what he said (I’ve attached the revised dxf file from the CNC guy):

“This is how its supposed to be, so the bit gets to the edges completely. Not in that length but enough to cover the 8mm bit diameter”

Could you please make the changes as required by the CNC guy & email me all the cutting lists, files, etc.

Thank you very much for working on this Ness, I really appreciate your work. This website is awesome smile

Cheers,

Manuel

Hi Manuel,

Here’s your project file again, hope it come across this time.

If this design is OK I’ll nest it for you.

Can you just ask the CNC guy if the attached DXF file is OK for him.

All the best,

Ness

Hi Ness,

Thank you for revising my project, I can’t see the modified project though… could you please re-attach it?

Regarding the frog-top element assembly, to be honest I don’t know much about cabinet making (if anything at all) so I will take your advise on how the parts should be joined. Please feel free to modify the project in whichever way you think best for ease of manufacturing & quality. I like the tongue & groove idea so that parts can be ready for glue straight from CNC machine smile

Just curious… how does the CNC machine handle the grooves that are on both sides of a panel…? Does it make the grooves on both sides of the sheet first & then cut the panels?

Please use the “angle tooling ” operation to round the corners as suggested. I will be sanding the panels before assembly so please make the changes accordingly & also give the proper over sizing where needed.

For setting up the precise machining files and the “minimum between shapes 22m”, this is something the CNC guy said so I don’t know why he wants them that way. This is what he said:

“Taking into account lay out for milling bit diameter of 8mm, but minimum is 9mm for the machine to register the shape. Spacing between each shape is minimum 22mm.”

Regarding the trimming of the outer edges, please use a trim cut of 10mm as suggested.

Again, please feel free to make any changes/tweaks to make this better as you have the expertise & experience in cabinet making

I will definitely like/agree with what you say smile

Cheers,

Manuel

Hi Manuel,

Thanks for buying a CabinetFile service.

I’ve quickly looked over your project an it seems generally OK.

Just 2 points that you might consider tweaking:

– the frog-top element has no assembly details. How are you going to join the parts together?

I would suggest a tongue & groove in this way the parts are ready for glue assembly straight from CNC nesting.

top-tg.jpgImage Enlarger

Of course you can use other methods like dowels, screws etc.each will have it’s advantages and disadvantages. What do you think?

You have also use an inner tooling operation to round of the corners, this is better done with an “angle tooling ” operation.

In the attached model I’ve changed these have a closer look and tell me what you think.

– groove widths are set to the exact thickness of material. This make a tight fit when assembling and you’ll probably have to manually adjust the board thicknesses. This is fine if you are sanding the panels before assembly as the sanding will probably reduce the final panel thickness. However, if you are planning on painting or varnishing the panels before assembly you might find it impossible to assemble them. In this case it’s possible to machine the grooves slightly wider that the original panel thickness using the Oversizing  parameters:

over-sizing.jpgImage Enlarger

Also, although Polyboard draws everything exactly to size, in reality manufactured panels can vary slightly in thickness so be careful when giving the exact over sizing.

Finally for setting up the precise machining files can you clarify the following:

Why is the minimum between shapes 22m, is this the diameter of the cutter?

Do you need to trim the outer edges of the panel to get a clean edge? Trim cuts are used if the outer edge of the sheet material are not directly usable because they are damaged or just not cleanly cut.

We usually use a trim cut of 10mm but if you want to do other wise ………

I attach your project modified for approval or further tweaking before processing.

All the best,

Ness
