Hello everyone,
here’s a little video to show how to use grain direction on different panels and how the cutting lists are adapted.

Hope this is helpful,
Ness

Jim…

Being truthful, unless its a expensive job, I usually do the kick bases in mdf and just change the front section grain direction as to be honest, I cant be arsed to change all the panels for a kick base….

Usually only the front is seen.

Hi Jim

The grain direction may affect, but if you think of the panel it will become evident if affects the cutting list.

What I mean is this. If you use a 100mm kick base as we all do and realise that its just a very low box unit, then the sides, double backs etc will be generated as standard as having a ‘height’ of 100mm with the grain, which when you do a cutlist will affect the cuts as it should be ‘width’ 100mm.

Look at the screen shots below and you will see that if you click, in this case, the double front in pine, the standard is as noted above.

But you can drop down the material list again and select a different grain, which will make the cutlist correct.

This shows the normal default grain as vertical.

This shows where on the right to change the grain to along cabinet width.

This shows the finished material changed. It ajusts the cutlist orientation too.

Jim, why not use dropbox to upload files!…

Hi Jim,

yes, sorry I had forgotten about the alignment issue that you had asked about.
Can you send me the PolyBoard file so that I can have a look at it?

In general, the cutting lists will take into account the grain direction that you have specified on each panel I could set you up a video to show how that works.

All the best,
Ness

Hi Guys, Thanks for this, got it sorted now!

Ness, Any ideas about the alignment issue as I dont want it to effect my cutting list. Also how does the cutting list affect the grain direction of the panels, is this taken into account or does it need to be specified? Or can it be specified so I can get it to look different in polyboard?

thanks

Hello everyone,

Thank you to Mark for answering this question from Jim.

Creating different volumes to insert different drawers is a great way of dividing up a drawer unit. If the volume separator is a null panel. The whole unit looks as if it’s only one piece to PolyBoard.

Here’s another way of setting up different heights for drawers using the “properties” menu.
If you use this menu you can not only change the heights of each individual drawer but you can also change the slack and even the shape of the drawer fronts.

All the best,
Ness

Hi Jim

On the right where you select what material the shelf / divider is made from, you can select it to be a nil panel on the drop down list.

Thanks Mark. How do I make it a ‘nil panel’?

I had used the divider way as a work around but dont want to end up with unwanted parts on the cut list.

Cheers
