Thanks for the response. How strange! I did exactly the same thing and ended up at 1590 as well. I need to measure again as there are some French windows by the stairs and one of the wings swings very close to the lefthand side of the first flight.
I also found the intermediate newel feature. But it appears that the stringer passes through the newel. Obviously in real life it cannot do that and I would have to tenon in each section of the stringer. But when I come to ask for a cutting list I would like to have the sizes of each stringer section. So it would be good to get the intermediate newels treated as any other newel an be able to specify by how much the tenons enter the newel post.
I have another question if I may; On the second flight, the profile of the stringer takes on a bizarre downward shape as it approaches the post. The system presumably feels that the stringer is required to support the 3 kite treads even though they would actually be supported in the newel. Is there a parameter that controls this behaviour?

I worked the stair so that you have step 4 as a straight one. I had to add length in the first flight (1590 instead of 1540 ). Do you have the needed space for this ?
You can add a intermediate newel by positioning your cursor on the flight and right click. You have then the possibility to add a left or right intermediate newel and define the position. Check and let me know the results 😉

I am just starting out on the design of a quarter turn staircase and am a bit blocked in 2 areas.
Just as background, it is important to realiise that the staircase will be freestanding and only bolted at the stair head. This is because the building is a stone and mud construction with a softwood frame inside made of 2x4s which I judge are not up to taking weight or sturdy enough to support. Instead, I want to support the turn and the start of the first flight on newel posts. 6 in all. They can be pretty thick and will be bolted to the floor.
Problems I am encountering:-
1. I am trying to define the 6 newel posts to support the first flight of 3 treads and the turning kite treads. The 2 posts at the right and back will accept the stringers that carry the second flight to the 1st storey. Stairdesigner seems happy to allow newel posts to be added at the start or end of stringers but I need to add them in the middle of stringers as it were as the stringers will not be bolted to the wall. I cannot see how to do this.
2. I want to have 3 regular straight treads in the first flight, and 3 kite treads followed by 9 straight treads to the stair head. There seems to be something about the length of the first flight which prevents me from having a straight 4th tread.
I am attaching the sds file as it stands at the moment.
Hope someone out there can help.
