Hi Kevin,
Which program did you use? Most of the cad programs can open a 3d DXF file but could be restricted in handling it as you could have a version not supporting 3D modelling. But they should be able to open it.
try Nanocad 5 who has a free version that you can use. This one should not have any problem with 3D files.
Be sure you export in DXF 3D and not 3ds as this is another format that can be used in SketchUp for example.
