Hi Dave,

You can set the first flight to 1000mm if you want, I just thought that 800mm everywhere gave a bit more going and a less steep stair.

Just tweak your design to what you want and post the final project here when you want us to send you the working documents.

all the best,

Ness

Hi David,

I’ll let Ness reply to your design query, but as far as getting the docs goes, Ness meant let us know when your design is finished and attach a final version of your .sds file to this forum thread for us to process.

All the best,

Stefan

Dear Ness

Many thanks for this, took a while but got the 3D view working now. SD needed DirectlyPlay as well!

I had designed the 1st flight of the 1st stair to be wider than the next two (1000mm then 800mm) but I notice that you have changed this to be 800mm on all 3 flights. Was there a reason for this? I wanted the stair to open out as it enters the room.

With regard to getting manufacturing docs I didn’t understand your response. You said just post to the forum…isn’t that what I have already done or do you mean somewhere else?

Kind regards

David

Hi Dave,

This is post from Ness, I’m travelling and writing from my tablet.

For some reason my name has been changed for someone elses, sorry about this I’ll see about it when I get a real internet connection. (EDIT: I’ve assigned this post to me now)

For 3d to work you have updated direct x drivers installed.

Check the 3d menu options to make sure 5hat this is the case.

You might have to update.

Different widths shouldn’t be a problem for regs.

To get manufacturing document just post your project on the forum.

If you would like an on depth revision use or stair file pro service.

All the best

Hi Ness

Thank you for that! Nice touch on the rendering :)

I’ve just re downloaded StairDesigner onto a new computer and started using it. It seems I don’t have access to the 3D element any more.

Also I had two separate stair cases (Ground floor and 1st Floor) but the widths are not the same. Is there any issue with this from building regulation point of view?

When I’ve got both staircases designed what is the process for getting a cutting list?

Many thanks

David

Hi Dave,

Thanks for posting your project.

I’ve had a quick look at your files and tweaked a bit the stair :

3d01-2.jpgImage Enlarger

I’ve set the first flight and last flight parallel.

The error message was due to overlapping penetration of stringer into the posts.

Should be no problem leaving a waney edge on the steps, you just have to cut back the part that is housed into the strings. I’ve set up the risers grooved into the steps, you can groove with a router against a straight edge.

Have a look and tell me what you think.

All the best,

Ness

Dear Ness

Firstly this is a fantastic website, product and forum, I’m so glad to be able to ask such an experienced expert.

I’m building two flights of stair in my my own house which I’ve built. I’ve only built one stair before which was a double winder for a loft conversion (quite conventional), spent an enormous amount of time designing it in sketchup…I hadn’t yet stumbled upon the wonder that is StairDesigner. This time round I’d like to push the limit of my ability as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’ve got a few queries.

Materials: I’ve got 41mm thick solid oak for the treads and will use hardwood ply for the risers and strings. I plan to laminate the ply up in some areas and then carve it back which gives a very striking effect (see quirkycampers.co.uk/campervans/bella for an example). The plywood carving technique gives me quite a lot of flexibility and doesn’t need to have every detail thought through in advance.

Model: I’ve made two models in SD which I’ve attached. Would you mind having a look? There is an error saying “stringboard intersect inside a newel post” but i’m not sure where to remedy this.

Waney edge: The oak I’m using has some beautiful grain and I’d like to maintain some element of the waney edge on the front of tread. Do you know if there is any regulation or rule on how much the front of a tread can deviate from a straight line? I’m thinking of following the grain up to maybe 40mm

I look forward to hearing from you

Kind regards

David
