Hi Daniel,

Here v3 with an 8″ offset on both sides and a handrail added on the lower right side.

We need to achieve the model of stair you need. Once this is done I need to know the little details you need like the position of the handrail, is there a wall side along the stair somewhere? It would be good to have a picture or a drawing showing the exact situation so that can have a better view.

Regards

Michel

Great! Thank you.  I would like the stairs cantilevered over the edge of the stringers, so for example maybe 20″ between the stringers and treads hanging about 8″ over on each side. Or whatever you think would look best. Maybe I make the stringers the same material as the treads, so about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 thick.

Also, need railing on the right side of bottom section, that is not against a wall.

When I get that I’ll go re-measure and double check everything. What do we do next?

It’s great Michel.  I am so glad to see it can actually fit. The stairway could potentially go like that, however there is one major difference from what I had in mind. The 81 inch dimension is the top to bottom (north-south)  direction and the 72 inch is the left to right (east-west)

Could you orient the stairs the same way you have them but revise it to fit with the changed opening dimension?cool

Hi Daniel,

Here is the first example of a stair. Take a look at the details and measurements and revert with comments to see if I am in the correct direction

I have an opening that is 72 inches wide, 81 inches front to back, and 88 inches floor to floor. My ideal stair would be a 90 degree turn with some winders, starting at the right front side of the opening, heading toward the rear along the 81 inch side, then turning 90 degrees to the left, going along the 72 inch side and ending up at the left rear corner on the second floor.

I would ideally like an open stair with no risers, two stringers underneath the treads, not on the edges (but that is optional). I am thinking of using solid treads approx 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches thick, 36 inches wide (except the winders).

Of course this has to conform to building code, max 7 3/4 inch rise, 9′ tread, and the winders, if I understand the code correctly, need to be a minimum of 6″ at the narrowest end, is this right?

So I’m hoping to do this with a 90 degree turn and the least amount of winders as possible, but if you can’t get it to fit I guess it may have to be an additional turn so the stairway ends up back at the left front corner of the opening.

For railings, I am considering wood rectangular newel posts with cables.  The idea is to make this very contemporary.

Is that okay for a start?  Let me know if you can start to work with this information.

Thank you,

Dan
