Thanks, again… smile

Seems like we have a working design here. Probobly will look a litle odd with the fifth step higer than the window but some compromises has to be done when fitting the stair to this corner without movinge the doorhole. Do you have an easy way of foreseeing if anything of the strings will cover the doorhole. According to my calculation it would be nothing, but I’m not sure. This is just for giving myself a chance to paint the picture in advanced and avoid any disappontments when everything is ready.

Anyway, if you don’t mind making the drawings twice you are more than welcome to print them now so I can just approx see what I’m supposed to do. Although I’m pretty sure there will be some adjustments in the design after we have taken the hole. This is probobly the most funny thing about old houses you can always be sure there will be things to solved during the process.

I have added some before pictures in my blogg https://petralindelof.blogspot.se/ ( at least the page with before pictures are written in englishwink)

Best Regards

Petra

Hi Petra, to add a link to your blog, click on the Profile button nearly top right on the forum. When your Profile opens, the first tab called ‘Profile’ should be highlighted, then click on the second button down called ‘Edit Profile’. There’s a box for your website on that page.

Hi,

I will check the video  for the adjustments after work today.

Funny you mentioned the part of users getting older, we have been living at our farm for almost 3 years now and now we are starting up some “small” adjustment indoor and we always ends up asking our self will this work when we grow old and need utilities to move around wink

Our current stair is a nightmare and we have already had a couple of incidents from both teeagers and middleaged persons so getting a new stair with comfort is of hig priority in this project laugh

Question: when you say you have adjusted my desing I suppose this is something you have done at your computer and it’s something I can’t see or are you sharing it with me somewhere which I should know about?

Best Regards

Petra

Hi Petra,

Keeping steps straight uses less wood and makes the stair easier and faster to build. On the down side the stair is less comfortable and more dangerous as the transition to winders is more abrupt and the risk of tripping is increased.

The danger increases as the stair becomes steeper and it’s characteristics reach the limits of the stair rule.

The danger also increases as the user gets older.

It’s to be noted that the American National Council on Compensation Insurance in working with you 2003 declared stair accidents as the second main causes of accidents after cars.

As with many things in life it’s all a matter of compromise and balancing out between 2 priorities.

In your case the stair is well within the stair rule and reducing the number of winders to 4 around the turing will not change significantly the comfort of the stair.

When you set up the strings as lower rails you have to go into the flight parameters dialogue box and set the strings and handrails straight for each flight. Note that you also have to reset the correct string width and nosings.

In this video I show how to do this:

https://wooddesigner.org/membe…..arameters/

I’ve adjusted a bit your design :

  • Made the rails straight
  • moved the upper post so that the nosing is not flush with the edge of the post(flush make it more difficult to make a clean assembly). also extended the bottom to below the 14th step , for a better finish,  you might consider hang just below the ceiling.
  • moved the first post back and set it to rest on the ground.
  • set the 2nd post bottom just under step 4. You might consider extending this post to rest on the floor.
  • made the winders turn evenly around the post (important for stair safety)

I’ve also added a rounded end to the 2nd step, but as you noticed with a stringer StairDesigner will not allow rounded nosings on all steps housed into the strings. You’ll have to add this feature onto the StairDesigner drawings manually.

The minimum stair well required will measure 2750×1000 . Here is the plan (the stair well length=headroom control length 2700+landing step 50) :

plan-2.pngImage Enlarger

If reduced to 850 or 800 headroom become a problem.

There’s no problem if you want place a link on your blog pointing to Wood Designer on the contrary this would be a help for us.

You can also place a link to your blog on your profile in Wood Designer .

Good luck with making the hole…..if you want any advice send me some photos so that I get the whole picture.

Tell me if your project is OK and l’ll send you the manufacturing files.

All the best,

Ness

Hm,

Thoughts around a easybuilt stair and a stair wich is fairly comfortable to walk in.

My plan was to make as many straight steps as possible which I think would minimize the wastewood. Adding a bottom rail at the handrail together with straight steps gives me a curved handrail….

Which kind of steps would be most comfortable to walk in?

Adding the stringboard as a bottomrail suddenly prevented me from making an arc on each step. Is there any easy way around this?
The reson of the arc is together with a profile on the nose and right curve is to bring some old style to a light stair. The newels and bannisters are supposed to get a hint of oldfashion as a complement.

Ahh, perfect,

Using the link I realised I’ve been there before just couldn’t find my way back :-)

I’m glad Stair Designer is much easier to use than navigating on internet.

I suppose I have to ask you Ness about seeing the acyuall drawings for the stringboards and the steps and after that I need some time to think and gain som currage before we make the hole. For me in opposite to most other people it is always hard to tear things apart when the project starts :-) Worst thing here is that I’m almost certain there will be a roofbeem which need to be moved for making enough space for the stair :-(

By the way I’m keeping a diary light on a blogg almost only for my own sake even though it is public, would you mind if I refer or even maybe make a link to wooddesigner.org . I would like to have a possibility to find my way back when my memory as always fades away and if somebody occasionally stumbles into my blog seeking a way of building a stair it would be nice to “show them the light in the tunnel”

Best Regards

Hi Petra,

Once you’re logged in, Full members should be able to access this page: https://wooddesigner.org/membe…..discounts/

Does that work for you? Could you tell me which link on which page you’re clicking on to get redirected. I cannot find any links yet that point to that page and that aren’t working.

Thanks very much, and sorry for the problems you’re experiencing.

Hi Petra,

I’m not sure why you can’t get to the StairFile page.

I’ll ask Stefan to have a look for you.

As for building the stair with 66×315 it should be no problem at all.

All the best,

Ness
