Hello Per Birger,

I’ve seen that you have bought a StairFile Pro so thanks for your support.

Concerning your stair are you thinking of making the strings flaired ?

If you could post a few designs that you like I could go over them to advise you of their difficulty and time needed to build.

Curved strings are make very nice stairs but can take a lot of time and ressources.

I would like to know more of the style of stair you are looking at. What will be the general decor of the room?

Hear from you soon,

Ness

I understand. I have initiated the process with Pay Pal yesterday. It says it will take 2 – 3 days before I have a response (new cc).

Hi Per Birger,

EDIT: Quick reply on behalf of Ness. Can you sign up for Premium Support first.

Thanks very much, and looking forward to seeing this project develop. Looks really interesting…

Cheers,

Stefan

Ty for your prompt response – as always.  Ive tried to fill in below – numbers referring to original question.

1.

2.

3. Okay. I should then run the verification with the control box before the nose and extra depth added? If the control box says ok, I should add the nose and the extra width afterwards?

4. Concerning nose and total width of the step is for me a question of esthetics. I want this stair to look good with as much wood as possible.

5. I understand your response as the stringers are correctly sized?

6. Okay. However there are paragraphs for stairs that have to be fulfilled in Norway. Please refer to (EDIT: links removed as no longer live)

7. I understand this should be between 30 – 36 degrees. Preferably 30 – 34 degrees?

8.

9. Guess you’re telling me its okay?

10. You mentioned curtail/flair. Are there templates? Sounds like a good idea. How do I put that into my project? I understand that you mean a separate piece should be made of plywood or something?

11. The balusters are to be made of glass between 60mm x 60mm newels – about 3 steps between. Are there any way to put this into Stairdesigner?

Regards

Per Birger

Of course I will sort out the membership issues. Please accept my apology. I realized that my inscription ended September this year. I have refilled the PayPal account. Hope to have this worked out really soon. Is the Pro as you refer to the 10GBP / month?

Hi Per Birger,

Looking at your project, you’ll need to off set the handrail and balusters  so that they line up with the step ends correctly.

Other wise the stair seems ok. You’ll need to add posts too.

As this stair is a center pièce in the living room you could make it look better with a curtail first step and even better if you make it with a flaired start, although this will make the handrails wreathed so a bit more work but worth it if the stair is central .

There are lots of ways of designing and doing a flair I suggest you look up some designs on the internet .

All the best,

Ness

Hello, ty for your assistance. It seems that an XP PC is no longer up to the task :-)

Below you will find the sketch and the project. I understand your answers. However, the wood is already there :-) Its all about the look and feel. The stair will be located in the middle of the living room. I really hope that I will succeed. I have attached the drawings for the house for your convenience and reference.

Hi per birger,

Welcome back to the forum.

While waiting to see your project file here are a few answers to what I have already understood.

2- You can make the steps any thickness you want, there is no limitation in StairDesigner . It’s just that 60mm make a lot of wood and a very heavy stair. To reduce weight and material costs, you might consider making a hollow or thick edged step.

3- steps can also the width you want . Although StairDesigner will tell you that the stair is not within the stair rule you can ignore the warning and calculate any stair configuration.

4- nosing also can be as you want. nosing or step overlap is not dependant on step thickness and should be a minimum of 30mm. Using more has not real advantage and only makes the stringers wider

5- Stringer width is dependant on the step angle, thickness and span, I’ll have to see your project to tell you the best size.

6- Res light means that the stair doesn’t comply to the mini/max stair rules set up in the control box

7- The control box allows you to see if the stair fits the generally recognised limits of step width, rise and going.

8- Control limits are only suggestions and moving outside limits is possible depending on the specific needs.

For the other questions I’ll have to see you stair project.

It would also be good if you could renew your inscription and buy the StairFile pro service so that I can go into a more depth analysis of your project.

Hope this is helpful.

All the best,

Ness

Hi Per Birger,

Just to reply here as well about how to add files to your post, when you click on ‘Upload Attachments’ it shows what file types are allowed, and the maximum sizes and dimensions.

For example, max image file size = 200kb or 0.2mb, with max dimensions of 1000 x 1000 pixels. Do your files meet the requirements? What are you trying to upload?

Best wishes,

Stefan

Hi all,

I am about to built another stair. The stair I am building now is straight. The measurements are;

Lightopening between floors; L 2900mm W !800mm

Height between floors H 2810mm

Height between ceiling and floor h 410mm

The stair is open (no risers) and have cut stringers and no stringboards.

Then the specials;

The stair is supposed to dominate. The stringers and steps are be solid wood. The step thickness is to be t 62mm. The steps are also to be 350mm wide (1800mm x 350mm).

On top of the stair there is a lot better headroom on the right hand side than the left hand (roof coming down and chimney). I wish to steer people to turn right on top of the stair. Ref sketch – some rail missing.

Then the questions;

1. How to shape the stair with the given “straight spec” to faciliate the right turn on top of the stair?

2. It is recommended that steps are no more than 30mm thick. Obviously 62 is a lot. However it is a wish to have the thick steps. How to work around this?

3. The Stairdesigner does not have a possibility to specify a wider step? It comes up with a width that is defined by the stairway and nose added? I think the step should have an insert a little less than the nose. Nose is 62mm, insert could be 50mm? Id like to tap of the step make pass the stringer ny the 50mm.

4. What is the recommended nose with these special steps?

5. There is no recommended stringer size? I am going for solid hardwood. Not really sure what size that is required?

6. Why is there a red light on the OK button at the stairwell parameters?

7. I’ve heard there are requirement as far as stairangle goes. I am not familiar with them, I dont see this being controlled at the Stairdesigner software?

8. The Control values seems static? Are they – why are they in an editable box? If I am within these control parameters….I am ok?

9. The stairwell measurements function is not clear to me? Is this actually the length of the stair? What is the connection? In my project the stair could be up to 3400mm before it is to close to a door. The opening is only 2900mm. So I want the optimum angle/stair rule number/height of steps/etc within these two limitations. How may the Stairdesign software help me figuring this?

10. I wished there were a bit more exotic templated in terms of steps shape. Obviously this is a very boring stair? How can we have it more spiritual?

I attach my sketch and the stairwayfiles Ive tried out so far in a reply. I am looking forward to your inputs fellows smile
