thanks for that Michael

we are happy with the changes you have made, can you proceed with the manufacturing files and documents for both stairs please.

can you let me know your comments on Stairs 2 to see if same changes have to be made as we are ready and waiting to manufacture all three stairs

thanks again for all your help

Hi Dominic,

Parameters on the step are wrong. It seems you try there too to make a tenon connection?

If you do you need to set your values correctly. You are using 15mm for upper and lower recess which makes 30mm in total and your step is only 26mm. So in fact you are cutting away that part of the step.

I have removed these settings and set the step penetration to 15 instead of 30 as this is too much for a stringboard of 43 mm. A general rule is: step penetration needs to be 1/3 of the thickness of the stringboard. So in your case 15 is the max value.

On the top stair, there were the same issues. I also repositioned the newels compared to the handrails to make them fit better. In angled flights like this one, you could try the diamond-tip newel. It handles angles better but is more technical in production. However, they would keep the stringboard shoulders straight.

I also worked on the step positions to have a better fit.

Here are the 2 versions.

Check the following

Look at it and check whether you need the tenon on the steps yes or no. Set the parameters correct if yes

use diamond tip newels if it is of use for you  ( they give an overall better connection with the elements). this is only for the top stair variant

Michael

Can we get the ground floor stair manufactured and files sent back to us as soon as possible as we are ready to make as we need to fit as soon as possible.

please let me know if I need to amend anything before manufacturing.

also Stair 2, I am making arrangements to pay for this to be manufactured but could you advise if all changes are ok and that it is ready for manufacturing.

Thanks so much for all your help and advice, – learnt a lot this morning.

Hi Dominique,

There are some very basic demands in your post so I will tell you where to look so you find out and learn the program.

the most important screen is your 2D work screen with the stair design on and on the right side the properties screen. These are giving you all the needed information of every element and parameters. You can set all parameters on that screen.

1 A overhang can even go to 50 mm. There is no specific rule here unless you have it in your building code

2  Enlarge a stringboard ( select first if you want to work on a single piece ). Look into the properties screen  ” stringboard parameters “

3 Step and riser penetration in newels. This is a link parameter. ( connection between elements ). So again the properties screen “links parameters, step/newel post link”.

4 Tenon connections. Again this is a link parameter. Properties screen “links parameters, newel post/stringboard links” ( upper, lower and lateral recess).

5 You cannot change the width of a step (7 in your case). Stairdesginer calculates the tread width for ideal steps. You can change the winding which pivots around the walking line. The only step you can change is a landing step which has to be added between flights. In the case of your stairs, I do not see any reason why this step should be made smaller?

6 For videos and tutorials you can always go to our help centre. Here is a link ( https://wooddesigner.org/help-centre/ )

7 Riser into a step you find in the step parameters where you can find the riser parameters “upper and lower offset”. For penetration into stringers and newels. Link parameters. So properties screen “links parameters, step/ stringboard links and step/newel post links”

Michael

I only downloaded this software yesterday and starting using it for the first time.

I appreciate all your help and advice. I have gone through your queries and I have made changes and I am attaching files again, could you have another look and see if I have missed anything.

I know the overhang can be between 25mm and 15mm but in this case I want a bigger step. If I have to make the string bigger to take the bigger step how can I do that.

How do I get the steps and risers to penetrate the newels, can you advise how or if there is a video demo available.

How do I use a tenon connection between stringboards and newels?

I tried to make step 7 smaller but I don’t know how to.

is there a video that I could use to see and learn how to make steps bigger and smaller?

all risers to plough into bottom of step by 10mm and into strings and posts by 15mm.

I am just staring to use this programme and need as much advice and help that I can get

is there videos to show step by step on using the programme.

Hi Dominique

I see a few issues on your stairs

1 What about the landing step on stair 2? Stringboards are not closing the gap with the riser?

2 Penetration of the steps and risers are too deep. Should be around 15mm max for these stringboards. Also, step and riser should penetrate the newels as well by 15mm.

3 Risers are not penetrating the step for a proper connection. Also, they are sitting on top of the lower step. Better to set priority to the riser and attach it to the back of the step.

4 Step 7 is overpassing the structure in stair 2. This can be corrected with step 8 positioning more towards the newel. Change it to a floating step and correct it.

5 The riser of step 8 overshoots the stringboard on the ground floor stair. this can be corrected by reducing the penetration back to 15mm (see point 2)

6 It is advisable to use a tenon connection between stringboards and newels as this is improving the assembly quality and overall finishing.

7 Stringboard should overpass the first step with 20mm

Please recheck and revert with comments.

Regards

Michel
